Scream for Ice Cream

Biltmore Creamery ice cream

A visit to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, isn't complete without a stop at the Creamery in Antler Hill Village. The ice cream is made with milk supplied by the estate's own dairy cows. On a hot day in the Smokies, this cool treat was just what we needed to wrap up a lovely first visit to Biltmore. That's mint chip on the left and pecan praline on the right. Yum!

How I Spent My Holiday Weekend

holiday weekend

Since I finished my houndstooth quilt (see this post), the long 4th of July weekend was the perfect opportunity to dig into my next quilt project. The fabric is a Botany jelly roll (precut 2.5-inch strips) that my sister bought me at a little quilt shop in Breckenridge, CO. The pattern is Random Reflections from Freckled Whimsy. The strips are in groups of 4 now, but they'll come together in groups of 5 and the layout will change to create a jagged reflection. So far, I'm enjoying working with some bright, summery fabrics.

(Jack was happy to stay close by after I got home from work today and set up to take this photo.)

Big Finish: Houndstooth Quilt

Jack approves
In a final push to finish my houndstooth quilt, I sewed the binding to the front and then saw this happening -- my cat Jack attempting to claim this quilt for himself. So I ripped it from his warm, fuzzy feline clutches and finished it up.

Houndstooth: finished front

For the pattern, I started with a pale houndstooth baby quilt pattern from a book, Baby Love, that I picked up at my local quilt shop. My comfy color palette is blue and green, so I tried to go a different direction with grey (Denyse Schmidt Hope Valley) and cream (Simple Abundance).

Houndstooth: finished back

But of course when it was time to buy fabric for the back and binding, I fell back on a blue print (American Jane) both because I liked it and because it was the best fit with the quilt top. I made my first attempt at bias binding because I wanted to try rounded corners, which I think will hold up better over time. (Also, the fabric I chose, Authentic, is a pencil stripe that looks best in the diagonal that bias binding produces, according to the kindly employee at the local quilt shop where I bought it.) I was surprised at how easy the binding and corners were, and I see many more rounded corners in my quilty future. (I used this tutorial on rounded corners.)

Turning a Nano into a Watch

LunaTik Watch Kit for Nano

What do you get your husband who says that he's ready to start working out again at the local gym? How about a Lunatik watch kit that turns a Apple Nano into a watch. He can now work out with his headphones connected to his watch, listening to his favorite tunes or even the radio. He's still getting use to it... I'm ready to "borrow" it.

Sneak Peek #2: My Lap Quilt

It's been a while since I offered Sneak Peek #1 of a lap quilt I'm making for myself. In the spirit of the Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild, of which I've recently found myself a member, and its challenge to finish a project and bring it to the June gathering for show-and-tell, I offer Sneak Peek #2. I finished the quilting yesterday evening, and all that's left now is the binding.

Big Finish: Blush Baby Quilt

Baby Quilt for Stella

I made this baby quilt last summer intending to give it as a gift, but I didn't have a recipient in mind yet. I just liked the pattern (Charm Squares Baby Quilt from Oh Fransson!) and fabric collection (Blush by Basic Grey for Moda). A friend of mine offered to buy it to give as a gift to one of her expectant friends, but I declined because I liked this quilt so much and wanted to save it for someone special to me. (Instead of selling her this quilt, I made another one for her in the same pattern but with different fabrics.)

Turns out that same friend of mine is now expecting a little girl in August, so I decided it was time to give this quilt a new home. I embroidered the baby's name and the year on the back corner to personalize it. I hope Baby Stella likes it as much as her mom and I do!

Time for Mini Tarts

fixins for mini tarts

My friend Susannah and I spent a recent Sunday afternoon amusing ourselves with a set of mini tart pans (a Christmas gift from my lovely sister), a recipe for lemon-blackberry mini tarts, and one of my favorite movies, Amelie. The tarts were delicious, the movie was as fun and quirky as I remember, and I'm working on a list of more tasty tarts we can make in miniature.
